About

History of Garie Boardriders Inc.

Garie Boardriders Inc., established in the stunning Royal National Park, south of Sydney, has a proud legacy dating back to its formation in 1977 and its first full season in 1978.

It was officially founded in 1977 by a passionate group of surfers united by their love of surfing and the pristine waves of Garie Beach. Over the decades, the club has become a cornerstone of the local surfing community, fostering competition, camaraderie, and environmental stewardship.

The Early Years (1977-1980s)

The club’s inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held in 1977, marking the official beginning of Garie Boardriders. In these formative years, members competed informally, forging lifelong friendships and a deep respect for the ocean. The club quickly grew in popularity, attracting surfers from across Sydney who sought the unique and uncrowded waves of Garie Beach.

With minimal facilities and challenging access, the early members displayed resilience and creativity. They built their competitions around the tides and weather, developing a flexible, grassroots culture that remains a hallmark of the club.

Growth and Competition (1990s)

By the 1990s, Garie Boardriders had established itself as a competitive force in the local surfing scene. The club hosted regular competitions, fostering a spirit of friendly rivalry among members. This period saw a rise in junior membership, as seasoned surfers mentored younger generations and encouraged their participation.

The club’s commitment to inclusivity and affordable membership fees allowed it to maintain a strong sense of community, even as surfing became increasingly commercialised.

Challenges and Resilience (2000s)

The 2000s brought new challenges, including the rising costs of competitive surfing and infrastructure limitations due to the remote location of Garie Beach. Despite these hurdles, the club thrived, thanks to the dedication of its members and committee.

In this era, Garie Boardriders strengthened its advocacy for preserving the natural environment of the Royal National Park. Members took pride in maintaining the beach’s pristine condition and hosting the Clean-Up Australia Day at Garie.

After a decade of involvement in the development of the Garie Surf Safety Centre, 2005 saw the Boardriders gain access to the new Garie Surf Safety Centre with its community hall and the Boardriders own storage facilities:

The decade long participation, as one of the key stakeholders at Garie, reaped rewards for Garie Boardriders.  Access to these types of facilities by Boardriders clubs in Australia is rare.

Modern Era (2010s-Present)

Today, Garie Boardriders continues to balance its dual focus on competitive surfing and fostering a strong, inclusive community.  The club is known for its commitment to affordable membership, ensuring that surfing remains accessible to families and individuals from all walks of life.

The closure of Garie Road in recent years posed significant challenges, but the club has adapted, proving its resilience once again. Members have worked tirelessly to maintain the club’s activities and community spirit despite access difficulties.

Garie Boardriders also remains an active voice in the broader surfing community, engaging with organisations like Surfing NSW and Surfing Australia. However, the club maintains its independence, ensuring that decisions reflect the best interests of its members.

Legacy and Vision

As one of the few boardriders clubs with dedicated storage and facilities at its home beach, Garie Boardriders holds a unique place in Australian surfing culture. Its history is a testament to the passion and perseverance of its members, who have built not just a club, but a community.

Looking to the future, Garie Boardriders is committed to nurturing the next generation of surfers, protecting the natural beauty of Garie Beach, and continuing to provide a space where surfers of all levels can thrive.

New members are always welcome.
